Scream meets YA in this hotly-anticipated new novel from the bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss.
One-by-one, the students of Osborne High are dying in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, the dark secrets among them must finally be confronted.
International bestselling author Stephanie Perkins returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down.
My Thoughts:
Who would have imagined that Stephanie Perkins, celebrated for her contemporary romance novels, could also master the craft of terrifying horror? I certainly didn’t. I’ll be honest, I had no idea what to expect from There’s Someone Inside Your House. My decision to read it was based solely on Perkins’ authorship—a factor I suspect will draw many readers, and rightly so. Her writing style transitions seamlessly from romance to horror. Fans of her previous work will discover much to appreciate here, while new readers may find themselves with a new favorite author.
Marketed as Scream meets Young Adult fiction, the promotional strategy for this book is remarkably accurate. From the opening chapter, readers are plunged into the life of Osborne High, where students are falling victim to brutal murders. The killer is not only vicious but also enjoys psychologically tormenting his targets. I found myself constantly on edge, unable to predict the killer’s identity or their next move. While written for a YA audience, Perkins doesn’t hold back on the blood, brutality, or sheer terror essential to a gripping horror novel.
Yet, horror isn’t the book’s only strength; the romance element is perfectly executed. Of course, there’s romance—would it truly be a Stephanie Perkins novel without it? This isn’t the super-sweet romance of Anna and the French Kiss, nor should it be. The romantic subplot here is ideally suited to the story: it’s neither overdone nor does it overshadow the central horror. It’s sweet, steamy, and everything you’d hope for from Perkins.
My sole critique lies with the ending. Without spoiling anything, it felt somewhat abrupt, and the killer’s motivation was a little weak. I’ve noticed others share this sentiment, though it didn’t significantly mar my overall enjoyment. While a more developed backstory and a stronger motive for the killer would have been preferable, the story remains largely believable.
Overall, There’s Someone Inside Your House is a clear departure for Stephanie Perkins, proving her talents extend far beyond contemporary romance. Hardcore horror enthusiasts might not find it overwhelmingly scary, but I’d still recommend it as an enjoyable, fast-paced read. For those, like me, who are easily frightened, keep the lights on while reading! This book is the perfect choice for a Halloween scare.
